Armada Way City Centre Regeneration

Armada Way City Centre Regeneration
Overview

Find out more about our work so far at Armada Way, Plymouth

The regeneration of Plymouth City Centre is the largest public realm project in the country, driven by a strategic partnership between Plymouth City Council and Homes England, alongside a significant government investment. The regeneration project aims to support and stimulate local economic growth and deliver much-needed new homes for the region.

As part of the regeneration project, there are a number of city-centre focus areas where improvement works are taking place - all aiming to create a greener, safer, more family-friendly city centre for residents and visitors alike.

We were absolutely delighted to be appointed by our client, Morgan Sindall Construction, to complete the landscaping works for Armada Way - at the very heart of the regeneration project and an iconic landmark within Plymouth.

The planned works for Armada Way have been broken down into 3 zones, with Zone 1 having recently fully re-opened to the public - and now we're working alongside a broad range of contractors on the development of zone 2.

Solution

Projects within city-centre environments often come with a wide range of considerations and constraints, all of which the Hooper Services team have the experience and know-how to navigate with ease, including the context of the city centre being a high footfall area with a mix of users - ranging from commuters to residents and tourists and the need to connect these newly landscaped areas with the existing surroundings. Working collaboratively with the existing on-site contractors to effectively navigate and overcome an already complex project delivery schedule, our teams were able to deliver what was needed both on-time and whilst fully adhering to our exceptional Health & Safety standards.

The environmental considerations around a project like Armada Way are vast, and for this project specifically, included plans to support with urban heat island mitigation, stormwater management, biodiversity and air & noise pollution mitigation - all of which were key factors in the specific choices made around locations, species and materials used.

One of the key aspects of the plans for Armada Way was the introduction of a variety of hand-selected trees, and as the trusted installation partner of GreenBlue Urban in the South West, the Hooper Services team set to work on ensuring the best possible success for this large-scale urban tree planting project. Utilising their 100% UK-manufactured and 100% recyclable RootSpace® system will ensure healthy tree growth, through access to uncompacted soil that can withstand the load-bearing capacity of the heavily engineered pavements above them - all whilst protecting key services and future damage to the surface by directing the roots away from the surface and utilities.

In total our team installed 250m2 of RootSpace® within Zone 1 alone, with more being installed throughout Zones 2 & 3. In addition to RootSpace®, we also utilised GreenBlue Urban's RootSoil within our tree pits to ensure lasting success.
