Starting a new career in landscaping
We’re delighted to welcome Mark Newberry, who recently joined the Hooper Services team as a Grounds Maintenance Operative.
Unlike many of those who join our team, Mark didn’t come from a landscaping background or have any previous grounds maintenance experience. Instead, he brought with him a wealth of knowledge and transferable skills gained throughout a varied career, including working as a gas engineer and plumber, and most recently as a Contracts Manager within social housing.
Following a serious health issue, Mark decided it was time for a change. He wanted to step away from the stress and pressure of his previous role and pursue something more physically challenging—ideally outdoors—where he could put his existing skills to good use while learning plenty of new ones along the way.
That search led him to Hooper Services. Although Mark wasn’t sure whether we would take a chance on someone without landscaping experience, he decided to apply—and we’re very glad he did!
Now eight weeks into his new role, Mark says he is “absolutely loving every minute of it”. Most importantly, he feels more like his usual, relaxed self again and can spend more quality time with his family at weekends—something that has become especially important following his recent health scare.
Coming into the industry with a fresh perspective, Mark admits it could be easy to assume that grounds maintenance is a relaxed job or “a bit of a jolly”. However, even he has been surprised by just how physically demanding the work can be—which is a real positive, as that was exactly what he wanted from his new career.
We’re absolutely delighted to have Mark on board. His positivity, proactive attitude and willingness to learn have made him a genuine pleasure to have on the team.
