GreenBlue Urban: Innovation in urban tree planting

We’re delighted to be a trusted partner of GreenBlue Urban who, with over 30 years of experience in urban tree planting behind them, have developed a range of innovative solutions that help to create healthier urban spaces in harmony with nature.

As the UK’s market leader in specialist tree pit products, and the pioneers behind the world’s first tree pit system, the GreenBlue Urban team are already delivering on their goal of drastically improving urban planting success and increasing leaf canopy in urban areas.

At Hooper Services we’ve been working alongside GreenBlue Urban for a number of years already, utilising their RootSpace® system on a number of projects including our current project at Armada Way, Plymouth as part of the regeneration of Plymouth city centre - the largest public realm project in the country, and and we’re delighted to share that we’re their trusted installation partner in the South West of England.

What is a soil cell?

Soil cells are designed to provide trees in urban environments with suitable conditions that promote healthy growth, without disturbing the structures above.

Not every soil structure is conducive to the growth of trees. Healthy tree growth is strongly influenced by soil structure, as it affects the movement of air, water, and other nutrients required for trees to mature. Effectively the ‘architecture of the soil’, soil structure is usually the most critical element in the success or failure of urban trees.

Too often, trees are planted in cramped planting pits and poor subsoil, resulting in stunted growth, with roots tending to colonise immediately underneath the paved surface, causing pavement damage. Without compromising or damaging the structural integrity of paved surfaces, how can urban trees be adequately provided for in their urban setting? GreenBlue Urban offers innovative 100% UK-manufactured, 100% recyclable polypropylene soil cell systems that allow for healthy tree growth within urban environments, through access to uncompacted soil beneath heavily engineered pavements and roadways. The system will direct the roots away from the surface and utilities whilst giving them an environment that maximises root growth and tree health.

What is the RootSpace® system?

GreenBlue Urban’s RootSpace® system is essentially a pavement support system – designed for maximum soil and rooting volume, to be ‘utility friendly’, with economic freight and industry-leading strength characteristics. Each cell is made from 100% recyclable material, are manufactured in the UK to reduce carbon footprint and the technology is backed by an unrivalled wealth of knowledge and experience. In short, these soil cells allow adequate space for trees to thrive, and offer next-level weight bearing capacity making them perfect for urban projects.

Is RootSpace® the only solution available?

No. The team at GreenBlue Urban offer a broad range of soil cell solutions that meet the varying needs of a variety of tree planting projects, including their RootSpace®, StrataCell and RootCell systems.

Additionally they have a wide range of supporting technology and products, designed to complement most tree planting projects - including irrigation, aeration, root management, underground guying and tree tie products. That’s not all though, the team have also designed a range of storm water and raingarden solutions that help manage rainfall and reduce flooding in urban spaces.
